About

In 2014, the Lissy family embarked on a journey that would reshape our entire lives and later, inspire the creation of the Neuro Ally Family Fund (NAFF). Our son Ryan, then just 9 years old, was diagnosed with ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This diagnosis marked the beginning of our deep dive into the world of neurodiversity, which we’ve come to see as a unique “deck of cards” each individual carries.

Determined to understand and support Ryan, I immersed myself in learning about ASD. About a year later, I attended an Autism conference in Colorado Springs, where I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Temple Grandin speak and meet her in person. It was a transformative experience, Dr. Grandin highlighted that elements of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are present in all of us. She explained that while previously it was believed only two distinct groups of children were being diagnosed with ASD, they were now recognizing an increasing number of “quirky” kids who experience significant changes around the age of 7 to 9.

Her words stay with me to this day, reminding me that neurodiversity is a spectrum and that each person has their own set of strengths and challenges.

Our family’s journey involved navigating the complexities of a 504 plan, understanding specialized language, and adapting our lives to meet Ryan’s needs. We faced numerous challenges, from managing daily routines to dealing with the impact of adolescence, which brought new hurdles we hadn’t anticipated. Throughout this time, we discovered that resources within schools were often limited and that essential support services were rarely (if ever) covered by health insurance.

Despite these obstacles, we were fortunate to have the means to provide Ryan with the support he needed. The positive impact of some of the programs we were involved in was profound. Ryan has thrived, becoming class president, Homecoming King, and gaining the skills to navigate a neurotypical world. He now holds a job, drives, and continues to excel in various aspects of life.

This experience ignited our passion to help other families access the support and programs essential for the success of their neurodivergent children. This led to the creation of The Neuro Ally Family Fund. Just as Ryan learned to trust and climb with the guidance of trained coaches and a supportive family system, our granting program aims to provide families with access to programs that support and uplift them, ensuring everyone in the community benefits.

NAFF is built on the belief that we are a village, united in supporting each other with tools, patience, education, and knowledge. By contributing to NAFF, you help create a brighter future for families (including parents and siblings) navigating the complexities of neurodiversity. Together, we can make a difference and empower every family to thrive.
